It's probably expecting glibc headers.  1.3.3 compiles just fine with
glibc 2.0.7 and egcs 1.1b, on my TL 3.0 devel box.  It's in 3.0, as a
result :)

you're using 5.3.9?? That's even older than the one shipped with RH 4.2 :)
