A) What's your port speed set to (should be 115200)?

B) Can you find in the NEC manual what the AT commands are to set it to
synchronous and asynchrounous modes?  Sync is 同期 (douki) and async is
非同期 (hidouki).

Make sure it's in sync mode when connecting.

If it still doesn't work, cover a new iMac with chicken entrails and throw it
out the window (must be from a sufficient height to smash it to bits) :-)
