I was referring to external Sportsters[1] -- I should have been more
explicit.

The 8390x was the first five digits in the serial number.  In USR
products, that corresponded to the model number.

The documentation won't do a bit of good if the modem just plain doesn't
work right.  Which Sportsters were prone to do.

You've probably got the internal version of the 83903, which featured
new-and-improved firmware.

[1] I dislike internal modems, too.  Can't put an ISA internal modem in a
    sparc, nor hang it off of a portmaster.
