I've used this before with no problems for a long time, so I don't think
that's it. Anyway, the disk that's having the problems is /dev/hda.
/dev/hdd is fine. /dev/hda never had this problem until I installed a
TurboLinux J beta on /dev/hdd (which has nothing but the beta on it), and
then LILO was sick and the head count was getting reported as 0.

This is a 100% pure Linux machine, and I haven't had a copy of MS-DOS in
years, so that's not really an option. One of the reasons I run Linux and
on a separate machine is to also make the vagueries of other fdisks a
non-issue.

Now if I could only figure out what's wrong and fix it :-)
