Hence the great need to convince everyone to follow a standard that 
makes sense.  i.e. Alt tags so that non-conventional / graphical
browsers
can make sense of pages.  Standards are only worth anything if people
follow them.  If people follow them, they are worth a lot.  Many good
standards have died because consumers (via buying / other choices)
refused
to comply.
