What if English becomes one of the extincted languages? Don't laugh - the
Romans doubtless would have, and look what happened to Latin. The ancient
Persians, the ancient Greeks, the ancient <insert empire here> all doubtless
believe in their times that their language would go on forever. What those
languages all have in common today is their extinction. Like English today,
they were the national languages of nations that enjoyed superpower status
and were used as lingua franca throughout the spheres of influence of these
nations. In some cases these countries held sway for centuries, but they
all fell into oblivion, and their languages with them. The same could one
day happen to English. The multimedia age makes this perhaps a little less
likely, but hardly impossible.
