As for Linux's heritage, Linus took the best of what was available (=
useful and he knew how to code it ;-) at the time and it was a pretty
mongrel mix.

Look at the myriad exceptions in any $EMACSSRC/src/s/linux.h and the
$EMACSSRC/src/m/ files that have to do with Linux, or look at the
exceptions in the Imake configuration files of X11 sources.  It seems
to be purely a matter of personal preference whether Linux is handled
