tlug: Ugly fonts in Communicator mail

1. Buy nice fonts. Japanese foundries are understandably anxious to
recover the high costs of creating large repertoires of high-quality
glyphs.

TurboLinux Pro provides the Ryobi TrueType fonts. In order to use
them with Netscape, you need either a TrueType or VFlib X server or X
font server. In the installation I have now, the Ryobi fonts don't
show up in xfontsel; I don't know why. You may have to install a
separate X server or xfs with those features enabled.

You can also (maybe) use TT fonts from Windows; however as I read the
license (old and for the US version, but I don't see why Bill would
relent), you're only legally allowed to use them under Windows.

2. Don't permit scaling of bitmap fonts. Add :unscaled to the
fonts/misc entry in your fontpath (see `man xset' for how to change
your fontpath).

Washi> Also, why is it that Navigator requires you to quit the

No, it's a limitation of Netscape. Lots of programs can do this. In
fact, Netscape will change Latin-1 fonts on the fly. My guess is that
Netscape users were complaining either about memory usage or the X
server freezing every time they changed Netscape fonts.
