well, I admit that in this case it might be nice to be able to save some
space.  However, I think what happened is that Redhat started the
practice, and it seems that all the 3rd parties packaging libs as RPMs are
doing it the same way... so when I started doing TL, I figured I'd do it
the same way - didn't really consider the implications that you're
bringing up.
