tlug: GUI Linux reliability vs other OS

I realize that I might be opening a can of worms here, but what the
hell.

The reason I'm posting this is that I seem to spend an inordinate
amount of my work time restarting NT boxes, and the web design people
that I work with are constantly bitching about the reliability of their
Macs. We also have to restart both the Windows machines and the Macs
every time we install anything.

Strikes me that the most stable machines in our office are our boring,
no GUI, Unix boxes that just sit there happily and churn. On the other
hand, for us they aren't pleasant to use. I realize that the relative
niceness of a Unix command line versus any GUI is debatable, but for
doing web stuff *some* kind of GUI is pretty necessary.

Does anyone have any stats about the reliability of Linux with a GUI
versus other OSs. I've seen loads of stuff about how reliable Linux is
as a web/file server, but never with any kind of graphical interface.
We're in the mood for being (moderately) radical, so it might be
interesting to set one of our design folks up with a Linux machine.

Regards,

Gav
