How about 

  /etc/rc.d/init/httpd stop

or in your case 

    /etc/rc.d/init/httpd restart

That is more elegant, I guess.

BTW, http.pid is in

  /var/run/httpd.pid

(You can easily find such files by doing a `locate <filename>'.)
