This might not be the kind of advice you are seeking, but do
you know `xpdf'.  It is a free PDF reader, which is not as
fancy as acroread, but therefore starts up *much* faster.
You get it precompiled, e.g., at

  ftp://ftp.pht.co.jp/pub/contrib/
