tlug: mkext2fs error...?

I just got an error from mke2fs that I've never seen before- can anyone
shed some light on it?

ext2fs_update_bb_inode: Illegal triply indirect block found while setting bad block inode

Achieved when doing:

mke2fs -c /dev/hdd1

/dev/hdd1 is a Linux partition (83), using the entire disk. Disk is an
NEC 2GB EIDE drive.

The drive's probably bad, but... what does this error mean, a bad block on
the bad block inode?
