Actually, this was happening when I created new images. Choosing RGB
gave it a color depth of 16 without asking me whether that's what I
wanted or not.

Partly because I'm lazy and don't want to shut down my system and all of
my other apps and reboot into Windows just to do that. I do everything
else at work under Linux now and usually only boot Windows if I need to
do some graphics editing or somebody gives me an MS Office document they
need translated or something. And once in a while during support calls
from Windows users. It's also partly just for the challenge of it, to
learn to use GIMP a bit. I think GIMP at least has enough potential
that I want to learn more about it, but two things I really wish they
would do are make it Japanese-capable, and fix it so that there was a
tool bar in each image window instead of just one floating free by
itself.

The amount of time I can spend in Linux now makes me wish that it could
run Win32 apps, and that there was a nice, easy editing tool for the
lookup dictionaries of the kanji servers (Mac and Windows blow us away
on this one). It takes a bit of jigging and dancing to get "Jonathan"
into katakana in Jpine :-)

Cheers,
