tlug: Color depth in GIMP

OK, here's one of the reasons why I hate GIMP, but at least it shows I'm
trying to use it :-)

When I create a new image in GIMP, it give me no option about color
depth, just a choice of RGB or grayscale. The default color depth it's
assigning to the RGB image is 16. I would eventually want to reduce the
color depth to 16, but want to work at 16M colors.

I can't RTFM because the FM, it seems busted. Typing "man gimp" gets me
a screen
full of mangled kanji and white noise, which is preceeded by a very
quick flurry of messages about "warning - can't find character with
input code nnn." Is it really the man page that's busted here, or is
something in my environment hosing it? (Other man pages are
fine, both J and E).

TIA,

Jonathan Byrne
