Try what Kei Furuuchi already proposed: do a "telnet
<your.internet.provider> 110" and look whether you get a
sensible response. If so, you popclient went bananas. Get the
latest sources ( they are from 1996 or so ) and compile it on
your system ( this is a lot better than just taking some
binaries floating around - believe me, there's nothing like
compiling your own binaries. Saves you a lot of trouble ).

Hmmm....go ahead and compile from the sources. This stinks.

Well, you have to. If you set up PPP you have to put it onto a
physical device and they are only accessible to root for very
good reasons. Actually, mailing and fetching mail can be done
with normal user level.

What the heck are you a doing in that Nara prefecture outback.
Apears to me like the last outpost of civilization dwn there
(believe me, I know Nara prefecture a bit.....).
