The ESS 688 and 1688 should work with the SoundBlaster driver. But
there's some Soundblaster capability that you're *not* supposed to
enable. I forget exactly ... and my notebook machine with the ESS 688
is not here right now. But if you're interested I can look up the
config for you.

I'm not surprised you had trouble. The kernel docs don't say much
about ESS AudioDrive, and the Soundblaster-compatibility section seems 
to imply that they won't work. But if you read *real carefully* and make 
the right guesses, they do -- at least sometimes.
