One way of explaining the difference is to say that Microsoft world is a
product market dominated by a single player, while Linux world is a heavily
fragmented service market. Viewed in this way, the Linux OS is actually
just an incidental side effect of the primary activity of the players in the
Linux community --- which is to advertise their expertise in one or more
corners of the Unix emporium. Linux quintessentially _is_ service
provision.

This more or less follows from the perspective on software development set
forth in Stallman's GNU Manifesto. Whatever one's personal attitude toward
RS might be, Linux is living proof that he was early in spotting how the
economics of programming can be made to work.

Anyway, welcome to the bazaar.
