I believe you will find that even with diald, /etc/ip-up gets executed
each time the connection gets established.  (Depending on your system,
it may in turn check for the existence of ip-up.local and execute it
if it exists.)  So you can install scripts that do interesting things
with that connection's IP address there and they will be automagically
executed.
