tlug: two problems

I'm having a couple of odd problems on my TurboLinux 1.4J machine at work.

The first one is I start up Pine (J) and it says it can't open the mailbox
lock because it's read only.  I've looked at /var/spool/mail/jonathan and
it definitely is not read only: it's rw rw, and jonathan is the owner.
Where else do I need to look to fix this, and does anybody have any idea
what might have caused it?

The second one is canna won't work.  Starting it has no effect.  The
TurboDesk service manager shows it to be in standby mode.  Disabling it,
enabling it, and trying to start it doesn't help.  I've tried to find some
kind of a lock file or something but have met no luck.
