I am not sure but are you using kterm and after you convert to Kanji
and hit the return key, they disappear.  That is what I understand you
are saying.  If this is true, you need to add the following to your
.bash_profile (or .bashrc is probably okay)

# 8 bit characters
# Without these lines, kterm will allow you to enter kanji
# but as soon as you exit the henkan, it will disappear
#

stty cs8 -istrip -parenb
bind 'set convert-meta off'
bind 'set meta-flag on'
bind 'set output-meta on'

If I misunderstood your problem, you can ignore what I am saying.
