I used to use it to test JDK1.1 applets.  
However, there is now a version of Netscape for Linux that supports 
AWT1.1.  I've found that it works on most things I need.  HotJava
is much slower than Netscape and sucks ram.  I also had some problems
with the scroll bar.  

I had problems with HotJava1.1, then went back down to HotJava1.0.

I'll see if I can get HotJava1.1 running and let you know if I do.
