tlug: XIM

Hello,

I'm trying to get Japanese input on my RH 5.0 laptop. So far I have

* figured out that Wnn eats too much of my RAM
* successsfully compiled and installed Canna
* successfully compiled and installed kinput2
* tested Japanese input with kterm (kinput2 protocol). Ok.

Now I want to input Japanese into XEmacs 20.4. Canna support does not compile,
so I chose XIM (should work with kterm & kinput2, too). Compiled and installed
fine. But what now? I searched the XEmacs info and FAQ files for XIM. Nothing
(only the sentence "I don't know about XIM").

I then had a look at input-method-xlib.c (XEmacs source) and found that the
first call the XIM support does is setlocale(). So I exported LANG=ja_JP (and
also a dozen other combinations of ja, japanese, euc etc.) and tried again.
setlocale() always fails. This seems to be a glibc-2.0.6 bug (it looks for some
non-existent locale files). kterm -xim seems to have the same problem.

Questions:

* Did anyone get further than me?
* Does anyone know the status of glibc2 locale support (especially Japanese)?
* How can I check in XEmacs and/or kterm whether XIM actually works? By a
command? By pressing a key combination?

I appreciate any help.
