Seeking Ace Production-Oriented Software Engineer
                      
        For One-to-Two-Year Job In Kyoto, Japan

     Telecommunications Research Laboratory


ATR in Kyoto, Japan is looking for a talented, experienced, and highly
motivated software specialist who is interested in coming to Japan and
joining a state-of-the-art research and development project in
statistical natural language processing. The ultimate goal of the
project is speech-to-speech Japanese to English and English to
Japanese translation. The immediate goal for the next one to two years is to
refine, slim down and generally optimize our working, comprehensive and
accurate natural language parsing system based on statistical machine
learning algorithms.

We are looking for someone with several years experience in a
production-oriented (as opposed to academic) UNIX/C++ environment.  
The ideal candidate will be familiar with making the transition
between research and production code. 

We have in mind a computer scientist who has at least a Bachelor's
degree (preferably a Master's) in computer science. Experience with
statistical modelling and machine learning techniques is a plus,
though not a necessity.  

The core set of abilities desired are:

In depth understanding of and experience in object-oriented design 
and implementation in large-scale production C++ systems. Experience 
with C++ class libraries (RogueWave, STL, etc ...) is an asset.


UNIX scripting for text processing (awk, perl, python). 

Graphical user interface experience in an object-oriented enviroment.

Software management skills: maintaining revision control,
 familiarity with managing groupware GUI programing environments.
