I don't think its the automounter. I've since found some rather dated
references on the web that point to problems with network interface
cards and the NFS read/write sizes. By default, the read/write sizes
are 8k, but they said that 1k works better with linux. I have to give
that a try. I have an old 3Com 3c503 card in the Linux box now, and it
was specifically mentioned a as problem card.

I guess I should put in a decent card. Any recommendations?
