Yes, the origin is Chinese, but the Japanese did what the always do, the
borrow and then make it Japanese. The Chinese use yin/yang in addition
to the animals while the Japanese use big brother/little brother
together with the five elements in addition to the animals (thereof the
importance of your 60'th birthday (a full zodiac cycle takes 60 years)).
If I'm not mistaken they have changed some of the animals too, I don't
think rabbit is part of the Chinese system, instead they use cat for
those years.
