Jim,
how about this, we keep the majordomo based mailing list as it
is. However, maybe we should move it to the new server over
time to allow the use of web or ftp interfaces for the archive
files. This could also facilitate in casual searches.
The mailing list would be used for technical support,
meeting announcements, and general Linux questions.

We could set up a test BBS style discussion group for a
special interest group. For example, your idea of
virtual communities, might be good for special interest
group.

With our own server, we also have the option of creating
multiple mailing lists. So, we could create
tlug-tpj-jp@example.com to discuss the Perl Journal
Japanese Edition project.

Of course, every time we split the discussion, we are
taking a risk. A discussion group needs a critical mass
to keep it interesting. So, we should probably keep stats
of the number of posts and number of people on both the
mailing list and the digest.

We could say that over x amount of people (for example 200)
on one list, we consider a split of some type. This could
also be calculated on posting volume. For example, over
20 notes per day, we look at the BBS format. I think that
recording the stats of virtual community development would
be really useful. Maybe we could eventually derive a
formula like x / y * z + l = optimal number of discussion groups.

Craig
