Try mc ( Midnight Commander ). It is not exactly X-Window
software, but it allows copies conveniently. It actually treats
ftp uploads and downloads like local copies. It also allows
marking files using regular expressions etc. Very cool. There
was a detailed description of it in the December issue if the
Linux Gazette by John Fisk. Look at http://www.ssc.com to
