The disadvantage is the 8530 serial chips used in the elderly Sun family are
well past their prime.  They have only a 4 character FIFO (compared to the
16 in your typical PC 16550).  I believe they are also limited to 38400
without hacking a separate clock.  I've been using Intel boxes (including
an elderly 20MHz 386) as my router and seem to get better performance than
when I tried my ELC in that role.
