tlug: mail newbie question

Hi all,

I started setting up sendmail 8.8.8 as an exercise in masochism - even building
the sendmail.cf by hand based on the tutorial in the Nutshell sendmail book. I
seem to have missed a basic mail setup step....

schweiz:~$ ps -aux |grep sendmail
root        55  0.0  2.1   82  228  ?  S    09:43   0:00 (sendmail)
schweiz    144  0.0  2.7   65  296 pp0 S    10:27   0:00 grep sendmail
schweiz:~$ mail root@example.com
Subject: ?
Why does this die?
>.
EOT
schweiz:~$ buildaddr: no mailer in parsed address
buildaddr: no mailer in parsed address
<snip>
MAILER-DAEMON... Saved message in /var/tmp/dead.letter

Any help will be appreciated.
