There are really two To: fields in an e-mail note.  The analogy that is
used is that of a real letter going through the postal service; there
is an address written on the envelope, and a "To:" line on the letter
itself (inside the envelope).  The one on the envelope is the only one
that the postal service cares about, and they do not have to be the
same.

Same deal with SMTP mail notes.  The To: on the "envelope" is often
identical to the To: in the message, but it doesn't have to be so.

The acutal mechanism becomes obvious if you send a message to an SMTP
port by hand.
