tlug: Meeting on Saturday

Hi All,

Thanks for making Saturday's meeting a success, and
a special thanks to Marc Christensen for coming and
giving us both good advice and good freebies from
Caldera.

I have left over from the meeting a couple of Caldera
T-shirts, a dozen Caldera-Lite CD's, and a half-dozen
Open-Dos CD's for anyone that would like them.

We're going to try to have meetings every second month
on the second Saturday, so the next meeting is
on October 11.

Also, for anyone interested in Lincity, attached are
my notes : ).

Cheers,

Joe Marchak

for what it's worth, here's my list for winning at lincity : )

1) Wind is from the South-West, so put your heavy and light
industry in the top right corner (North-East). In this
    game, neighbours don't complain.

2) Build up an economy exporting Food, Goods, and Steel,
and importing Coal and Ore. This will give you a
    budget surplus.

3) Avoid coal mines, asphalt, and tips. Use recycling plants
and mills to take up byproducts.

4) Build a railroad from your heavy industry to a very close
port. Rail transport costs are high, so keep your rail
    lines short.

5) Let your budget surplus grow over a few days. You'll probably
need over 200M to make your rockets, since you'll be running
    in the red during construction.

6) Rocket launch areas are prone to fire if there is a bad
launch, even if you have fire stations nearby. Areas north
and south of the launch pad seem hardest hit. Add a couple more
    firestations.

7) Just before you want to build rockets, switch your ports to
import steel and goods. Time is important here, and
anything that helps you build rockets faster is good.

8) You need a high tech level to prevent launch failures. Even
at a tech level of 103% you may get failures. Build up
your universities and add a few schools just before you
build your rockets. As you lose people, your tech level will
    fall.

9) Power-lines can be broken by paths and rail, and still
    function.

10) Send all but about 6000 people up on rockets ahead, and then
build 6 launch pads to take all the rest in one batch. You
need people (jobs) to build the rockets, so if you send
them away 1000 at a time you will reach a point where you
still have people left but they aren't enough to finish
construction. Also, your tech limit will plunge with
    fewer people.
