How about switching to qmail instead? http://www.qmail.org/

I've found it easy to install and use. It has facilities for limiting who
can bounce mail off your machine. It also provides easy configuration for
multiple virtual hosts, user configurable aliases, and simple mailing lists.
The author also (endlessly) points out how much faster and more secure it is
than sendmail.

All of which avoids your real question. I don't know how to tighten up
smail on my other machine either.
