I was actually surprised how easy it was to set up my LaserJet 4
using the RedHat Control Panel.  It seemed to prompt for everything
and the write the /etc/printcap file correctly.  Admittedly, I've
only printed English.

I'm not familiar with apsfilter... but isn't that for the other
direction?  Taking plain ASCII and turning it into PostScript?

You probably want GhostScript (and you'll want to review the
archives for the long string of messages that Steve and Craig
exchanged about how to do Japanese successfully) as the filter.
It is capable of taking PostScript and spitting out HP PCL which
your printer can understand.
