I'm not using a laptop, but have had excellent success with mgetty
running on my elderly 20 MHz 386DX.  This machine handles incoming
fax and data calls, and serves as my IP masquerading router to the
'net.  I've been using mgetty with first my Supra 14.4 and now my
USR Sportster 28.8.
