I had this same problem working with karaoke microphones and a variety
of other microphones that were made for keitai-denwa.  I could only
get it to work with a QuickShot PC microphone.  The input jack is the
same, but there appears to be some type of amplifier in the PC 
microphone.

I can use the dsp device fine on my system now.  I can talk in a
normal voice and it records fine.  Output is fine at normal 
volume levels.
