I've had hardware fail, I've had two separate disks wiped by Windows
NT (one of which was fine through 3 beta versions), I had a
reconstructable FAT implosion under DOS once, and I've never lost any
data due to a Linux kernel failure.  I think they're trying to tell
you something else....  :-P

But good luck with the recontruction.  There are things that
commercial systems do better than Linux, and I can only wish that
those systems were more robust for people who need those functions, or 
prefer the user interface.
