You can run Linux without using the X Window System.  In fact, that
is my preferred mode on my Sun with its giant virtual consoles.

It would be tough for IBM to have deviated too far from the standard
configuration and still have game software (much of which still talks
directly to the silicon) work.  I use the Mach64 on a couple of different
cards without problem.  If you like, I could send you the configuration
file for your amusement.
