Craig,
  To take advantage of the Wide SCSI interface, you need all wide scsi 
devices on the channel (you can mix and match 8 and 16 bit or narrow/wide 
devices on the same scsi bus, but then the scsi bus is moving at 8 data bits 
wide or narrow mode only).

Do you have wide scsi (68 pin) drives?  If not,  you may as well go with a 
2940 or 2940U (Ultra card can use non Ultra regular Fast SCSI drives)

the card I have here is the 2940.  It is not 2940W.  Is there that
much of a performance difference between the fast SCSI-2 and
fast SCSI-2 wide?

I have not paid for the card yet.
