Re: Debian 1.1

Craig,
If your os or application is cpu cache intensive (and I can't think of any
that aren't), you'll want to get a pipeline burst cache motherboard, and in
addition you'll want to use EDO memory, or have a beefy L2 fast 512K cache.

Try building a new kernel. If that doesn't work, try using Slackware
or BOGUS binaries for the net stuff. Or rebuild them.

Why Apache? What's it got that recent NCSA and/or CERN HTTPd's don't?

Craig> It has PCI and I am going to buy PCI SCSI for it. Any

4MB of onboard cache for the SCSI host ;-).

Craig> Is there any trick that I can do to allocate system DRAM to

Why "processor cache"? Processor cache is *faster* memory. That's
why it's expensive. Allocating system DRAM to the processor's cache
just adds an extra memmove to the pipeline; it can't speed up access.

Just use it as RAM :-); I regularly am swapping with 32 MB :-P I
append my current "top" and "ps ax" figures: there's not that much
running, I don't have any of my other users logged in, I'm not
rebuilding the kernel, etc etc. Now I could recover about 5MB
instantaneously by flushing Netscrap's RAM cache, I think, and there's
something screwy going on with the crond, maybe it's leaking memory
too. Cannaserver uses a fair amount. But mostly, "X expands to fill
up the available RAM, and then some." That's why we use "X" as a
variable, because it varies!

Add wings. ;-) The best wings are BBQed at "Buffalo Wild Wings and
Weck", 1864 N. High St., Columbus, OH, 43201. I forget the phone
number (try Dial-104 :-), but they deliver, at least in the Ohio State
campus area. ;-)
