I would assume that the best you're going to do on that is the SVGA
server, so tell it that. Try the 'xf86config' utility (I assume you
have XFree86 3.x.y). Try the various servers using the '-probeonly'
switch.

I would assume that on a notebook you have at best 640x480x256 without
much in the way of accelerations, and even if that's not true you
should be able to live with the XFree86_SVGA server. If that doesn't
work, you can fall back on the VGA servers XFree86_VGA16 and
XFree86_VGA256, or even the mono server.

The only thing that should be hard about configuring an X server is
the monitor clocks, and nowadays these are probed for and you are
strongly advised *not* to set them yourself. For the accelerated
servers, you might need to know your chipset, but you apparently don't
have one of the supported ones. You could try calling C&T to see if
they emulate one of the accelerated chipsets, but I doubt it's worth
it.

So I would just use the configuration utility, tell it you're SVGA if
it can't figure that out for itself, and if that doesn't work drop
back to the VGA servers. It's not dangerous, AFAIK. It's video
monitors that are at risk from the incorrect clock settings.
