Someone on the linux-kernel mailing list figured out that the video corruption after exiting the X Window System in 1.3.28/29 was caused by the custom VGA font utility (setfont). Removing it and using the ROM-based fonts avoids the problem. I just got 1.3.30 this morning and it seems to have solved the problem.
