I don't know of any huge longterm risks with nuclear energy if you
follow best current practice, except for the still unsolved problem
(even in principle) of long-term storage of waste.

The risk from nuclear energy in Japan arises because (like its cousin,
nuclear weaponry) it's capable of making whole counties uninhabitable,
after killing and maiming their existing inhabitants in rather
unpleasant ways, and politicians (I'm looking at you, Abe-shuso)
consistently break their promises to provide for timely evacuation in
case of an accident, or for reasonable support for relocation for more
paranoid residents.
