That's more than a bit unfair to modern forum software like Discourse.
Yes, they require nonnegligible work to maintain compared to mailing
lists, but modern systems have reduced that dramatically, in part by
allowing "reliable" users to gradually acquire moderation and
maintenance privileges.  The same "socialization" of moderation means
that active Discourse instances don't "get full of trolls and garbage"
(at least the technical ones I've participated in, and I would expect
TLUG would similarly be quite clean).

The "political" mailing lists and newsgroups I've been on have tended
to be as troll-filled as the political forums I've seen.  I just don't
bother with either any more.

Me too, very much.  But I do want to be fair to the proponent's idea.
