BTW, anyone here making their own boxes for packet capture/analysis?

Kalin,
I've made a few for both "portable" on-site customer LAN & WAN facing, and ones that's sit in a data-center and connect to span ports on every switch so that every point in the network can be captured without having to be in the data-center or customer site. Been using them for several years, mostly they've been used for voip captures analysys, mos scores, and carrier connectivity error proving and of course everything else. They have certainly saved a lot of driving/traveling time and have worked flawlessly so far.
