Re: [tlug] What to do with two old 1.5TB hard drives?

Hi,

I have two 1.5TB hard drives (3.5”, WD Green) that I don’t need any more. I’m trying to decide what to do with them, since right now they are just sitting on my desk.

I live in Tokyo, so I don’t have much room. I’ve always thought about getting a NAS solution of some sort, but really my desktop (only two drive bays, it is a media style case made to be silent, and does a very good job of it. Both bays are full, with an SSD and 4TB hard drive that replace the two drives in question) suffices. If I had lots of room to spare, I would put a NAS up in a closet somewhere, but that isn’t the case.

I don’t think I could put the drives to productive use at home. I don’t want to just throw them out. I’m pretty sure they would burn (given a hot enough fire, they never really specify how hot something has to be to be considered 燃え-able) but don’t want to throw them out.

I guess I could resell them, but that sounds like a lot of work. I don’t know how long it has been since I’ve logged in to Yahoo auctions, maybe Amazon.co.jp would be ok, but I’m lazy and don’t have boxes for shipping.

Are there places I could go to recycle these? Are there people on this list who live in bigger houses than mine and want some old hard drives?

I do not live in Tokyo, but could put them to use to store downloaded torrents. I have a case with eleven 3.5 inch bays that could always use new heat sources. Another person from this building spends Wednesday evening through Saturday mornings in Shibuya-ku and we might be able to work out a pickup or handover arrangement.
