The Communications Ministry (or the Communications part of the dog's breakfast it became a part of) told carriers last Friday that they have until some time in 2015 to unlock all phones. Right now, there are locked and unlocked versions of some sumaho. My Sharp 303 was purchased from Softbank unlocked, but it came with a contract that did the locking in quite effectively. I'm told that this model can accept any of the overseas carriers' SIM cards to make it a local phone when traveling in specific countries.

(BTW, is anyone else's TLUG account getting spammed by someone sending mojibake and a link? I can get it dropped into my spam folder but I can't set up to have it dropped directly to trash because the From: address is also mojibake)
