I still remember the look of horror on the faces of our first-year Japanese 
class when all our homework first came back completely covered in red circles 
- which means "wrong here" in UK pedagogic culture.

On the original topic, I'm designing a application for Japanese Sign Language 
users (it's a fantastic, fascinating project), and one icon turns on subtitles 
for those benighted hearing folks who can't understand JSL. The icon I chose 
was something like

which made sense in my culture, but apparently the thing that all the Japanese 
users was expecting was [字]. FontAwesome contains a "closed captioning" icon 
which looks like [CC], which would probably do the same job for en.US, but 
would be confusing for en.GB, where we don't (AFAIK) use the term.

And while I'm on the subject, I'll be in Saitama (Higashikurume area) 
Monday-Tuesday for more discussions with the JSL project folks. I could come 
into Ikebukuro on Monday night if there's any interest in lifting a few jars.
