I reckon you have not been to NYC in the last 10 years or so, though.  Even
before cell phones were commonplace, pay phones in NYC are a bit of an
adventure.  Homeless use them as toilets, among other things.

However, NYC is a bit of a cesspit, so probably not a proper gauge of the
world, though we like to think of ourselves as the center.
