I was using mp3gain for now, and normalization was (quite) satisfactory. I completely forgot about sox, that I did use a couple of years ago. Google did not help me a lot, but I did not search for the magic words "dynamic range compression" :-)

Sox is definitely something I want to use (I prefer command-line, as I want to make a quasi-automatic CD creation, from files copy from a playlist (iTunes or m3u), to music transformation and ISO build. It is likely it won't work well automagically for dynamic compression, but I will try anyway, and adjust later if necessary.
